Study of the Naturalness of Your Products

— On-site and Laboratory Interventions —

Flavorings and essential oils are key ingredients in the food and cosmetics sectors, but their naturalness can sometimes be questioned due to fraud or cross-contamination on production lines.

VERIFICATION OF NATURALNESS: ASSURING AUTHENTICITY

What is a natural product claim?

By naturalness, we refer to both the non-petrochemical origin of a substance and its connection to a specific raw material (e.g., plant).

A natural product is composed of ingredients derived from natural sources, undergoing minimal chemical or artificial transformations for the food, cosmetic, or pharmaceutical industries.

A natural product contains natural Ingredients with minimal Transformation, and No artificial additives: Natural products must not contain preservatives, artificial colorants or flavorings, or other non-natural substances.

Why authenticate the naturalness of a natural product?

  • Verify the natural origin of a flavor or fragrance

  • Perform quality control on the natural products you place on the market

  • Get support in case of litigation with a supplier regarding the origin of a flavor or fragrance

  • Receive assistance for certification (e.g., ECOCERT) or standardization (e.g., ISO 16128)

Case study: Issues of analysis in the food industry

What are the types of natural flavor fraud?

According to European Union legislation, as established in Regulation (EC) 1334/2008 or equivalent, and/or the industry’s explanatory guidelines (IOFI, EFFA, etc.), particularly concerning the central issue of naturalness, flavors are classified into two main categories:

  • natural flavors (from plant or animal sources)

  • synthetic flavors. These can be “identical to natural” or “artificial” (synthesized compounds not found in nature).

How to verify the naturalness of vanilla?

Natural vanilla comes from vanilla pods. Due to high demand, production timelines, and high costs, a synthetic alternative has been sought for the natural product.

Synthetic flavors include synthetic vanillin (identical to natural) and ethylvanillin (artificial), the latter having a much stronger perception than vanilla.

To detect artificial flavors from natural ones:

  • We work with an analytical approach combined with comparison in a database that allows us to detect counterfeit and false geographical origin claims of their products.

WHAT STRATEGY SHOULD BE APPLIED TO VERIFY THE AUTHENTICITY OF A NATURAL PRODUCT AND IDENTIFY FRAUD?

If you wish to verify the quality and authenticity of your products : Essential oils, flavors, fragrances, or in the food industry...

Why a holistic approach to the study and analysis of your natural products?

To verify the authenticity of a product, we employ a cross-analytical approach combined with comparison against a database that allows us to detect counterfeit products and false geographical origin claims.

Our holistic approach combines targeted analysis and broad screening for a quick authenticity check of the matrices as a whole.

These techniques help verify the authenticity and integrity of the product, ensuring true traceability.

What is your issue: fraud, verification, development of natural products?

We will determine a specific service with you based on your product and issue: verification of naturalness, authenticity, or suspicion of fraud from your raw material supplier.

  • Verify naturalness / pure natural molecule precursors
  • Verify vanilla extracts and flavors
  • Verify "Natural Flavor" claims
  • Integrity of essential oils

ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES TO AUTHENTICATE A NATURAL PRODUCT

How to verify the bio-based nature of your product?

  • Determining the bio-based content in a mixture. Bio-based content analysis (carbon-14 analysis) is a reliable method to distinguish a natural origin from a synthetic one.
  • DNA sequencing, PCR...
  • Chiral chromatography: This is an analytical technique that allows the differentiation of chiral molecules, i.e., molecules that have different physical and chemical properties despite having an identical composition. This technique is commonly used to detect the presence of synthetic products in food flavorings or essential oils.

How to ensure the source of your natural products and molecules?

  • Measurement of specific natural isotopic fractionation by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry). Isotope ratio mass spectrometry is another analysis technique that identifies the isotopic composition of molecules. This technique can be used to detect isotopic differences between synthetic and natural molecules, helping to ensure the naturalness of food flavorings and essential oils.
