INTERVENTION ON POLLUTED SITES AND SOILS

What is a diagnosis of a (potentially) polluted soils?

A soil is considered polluted when it contains high levels of toxic substances or organisms. This contamination degrades the soil ecosystem and can harm human, plant, and animal life.

To enable an accurate diagnosis of the contamination level of a soil, precautions must be taken from the first actions on-site through to the analytical process:

  • Sampling: Areas, conditioning, preservation...
  • In-situ analysis using rapid field methods: prioritizing contaminated areas, selecting samples to be taken
  • Conducting analyses according to regulatory and normative constraints: preparation method, technique, and protocol
  • Monitoring of standards and their evolution
  • Optimizing analyses based on historical context and/or initial studies: heavy metals, synthetic organic compounds, asbestos...

What are the causes of polluted soils?

  • Human activity leads to soil pollution, notably the massive extraction of hydrocarbons and the explosion in the number of synthetic substances, which has led to the widespread nature of this situation and its consequences.
  • Rehabilitation of the oldest industrial sites that are no longer in operation: these industrial wastelands are historically polluted by waste deposits, abandoned punctured barrels, and soil that has absorbed liquid waste discharges.

The sources and causes of chemical soil pollution are numerous. Experts in polluted sites and soils are trained to understand the regulations, standards, and procedures required to prevent, identify, monitor, diagnose, treat pollution, and control its impacts under the best conditions.

OSE SERVICES EXPERTISE POLLUTED SITES AND SOILS

On-Site Resources

On-Site Expertises travels directly to the site to carry out the diagnosis, initial measurements, and consequently optimize sampling for laboratory analysis:

  • Contamination by Heavy Metals: As, Cd, Cr total, Cu, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn.
  • Chemical Contaminations: Total hydrocarbons (HCT), trace organic compounds (PAHs, PCBs, or Bisphenol A).
  • External Pollution: Illegal dumping (asbestos...).
  • Presence of Unknown Products: Debris, leaking, unlabeled containers...

In the field of heavy metal detection, precision and speed are crucial.

This is why OSE Services has introduced in-situ methods (on-site) directly in the field, with the help of a qualified operator and techniques capable of analyzing:

  • Organic compounds such as FTIR spectroscopy
  • Inorganic compounds such as portable XRF spectroscopy. The portable XRF device provides instant and precise identification of heavy metals.

These miniaturized technologies and their portability allow for direct on-site intervention and provide immediate results. Moreover, the intervention can be scheduled during drilling for improved efficiency. This not only minimizes delays but also ensures real-time and optimized data collection.

The samples are then analyzed in the laboratory according to current standards and regulations (NF X 31, NF X31-151, NF X 31-148, NF X 31-147, NF ISO10390, NF ISO 11074....).

Water Monitoring: On-Site Sampling for ICPE

What are the issues with PFAS?

  • PFAS are often released into the environment during industrial production processes, whether directly into water, air, or soil. Industries that use or produce PFAS can generate effluents contaminated by these substances, either through accidental spills or through controlled releases that are inadequately treated.
  • Once in the environment, PFAS are extremely stable and degrade very slowly, which makes them particularly problematic. Their presence in industrial effluents can lead to the contamination of water resources, affect wildlife and plants, and, by extension, have negative impacts on human health.

In France, the regulation concerning PFAS is becoming increasingly strict due to the growing awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with these substances (for more information).

What does OSE Services’ intervention involve?

Once the samples are collected on-site, they are sent to specialized laboratories. With state-of-the-art equipment and advanced analysis methodologies, we are able to detect and quantify the PFAS compounds present in the samples with precision.

We support you in meeting your regulatory obligations.

OSE Services’ interventions comply with the strict requirements set by the DREAL. We ensure that every step of our process, from sample collection to laboratory analysis, is carried out in accordance with the relevant standards and protocols.

ANALYTICAL STRATEGIES FOCUSED ON POPs

Who are the POPs?

The term POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) refers to a group of organic substances that possess four key properties: persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic, and mobile.

  • Persistent: The substance degrades slowly.
  • Bioaccumulative: The substance accumulates within living organisms.
  • Toxic: Exposure to the substance may cause harmful effects.
  • Mobile over long distances: High concentrations are measured far from discharge points (e.g., in the Arctic).
